Cathy and Allan Peters MRAIC

Picture

Allan’s passion for art, design and construction began when he was very young.  In high school and university Allan excelled in the sciences and art, while participating extensively in outdoors clubs.  This was an unusual combination but an excellent preparation for his future business.  At the University of BC he graduated at the top of his class with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.  He won scholarships to attend Banff School of Fine Arts in the summertime.  He also worked in construction throughout his university years and in 1984 completed a Bachelor of Architecture at UBC where he could combine his unique talents of a practical and scientific mind with his creative disposition.  Allan subsequently became a member of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.

After building their first house together on Bowen Island, Allan and his wife Cathy formed the company A.W. Peters and Associates Ltd.  Cathy, who has a Bachelor of Home Economics, is a people person and enjoys the personal contact with clients.  This combination of talents has produced a successful niche business where Allan and Cathy design and build extraordinary custom homes, complementing the individual, specific needs and interests of the client.

Allan has remained on the cutting edge of new home technology, specifically in the areas of energy efficiency and healthy home design and construction.  He regularly attends conferences and workshops.  As an example of his commitment to continuing education and certification, he was the first in Vancouver’s ‘North Shore’ to become certified under the national R-2000 program*.

Allan and his wife Cathy reside on beautiful Bowen Island on their charming waterfront property where
they now enjoy visits from their three children.

*What is the R-2000?
R-2000 is a voluntary standard administered by Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and is delivered through a network of service organizations and professionals across Canada.
Developed in partnership with Canada's residential construction industry, R-2000 is one of the initiatives offered by NRCan's Office of Energy Efficiency. This initiative’s aim is to promote the use of cost-effective energy-efficient building practices and technologies. Through the use of third-party evaluators and a government of Canada supported certification process homeowners are assured of real value and consistency.

What is the R-2000 Standard?
The R-2000 Standard (R-2000) is an industry-endorsed technical performance standard for energy efficiency, indoor air tightness quality, and environmental responsibility in home construction.
Houses built to the R-2000 Standard typically exceed the energy performance requirements of the current Canadian building codes and are recognized by meeting a high standard of environmental responsibility.
Since its introduction over 25 years ago, the R-2000 Standard has become the benchmark for energy efficient new home building in Canada. The Standard is continually upgraded to include new technologies as it becomes established in the marketplace furthermore it is flexible enough to apply to any type of home.

An evolving standard.
Government and industry manage R-2000 technology through consultations. They involve researchers, home builders, product manufacturers and other housing experts.
These partners meet regularly to review new housing research and determine if the R-2000 standard should be upgraded to reflect new developments. Whenever changes are made to the standard, R-2000 home builders receive additional training and technical information to help them incorporate these new improvements in the houses they build.
